We’wha’s Dream

This is our passion project. It’s been on our hearts and minds for decades. We’re thrilled to be receiving accolades from Santa Barbara International Screenplay Awards and the Outstanding Screenplays Feature Competition.

In 1886, three misfits took a trip to Washington DC to present the Zuni ("A:shiwi") two-spirit, We’wha, to the president of the United States, Grover Cleveland.

We’wha’s Dream, inspired by actual events in American historyis the story of an unlikely alliance between two ethnographers sent to document Zuni culture, and a Zuni two-spirit named "We'wha."

The two ethnographers, one an early feminist and the other a closeted gay man, expect to encounter a "savage" culture. When they meet We’wha, a physical male living a woman's life, they learn the depth and richness of Zuni culture and how it allows all members to be accepted.

Their discovery of the hidden reason for the expedition, to "catalog the children" to take them to boarding schools, leads the three to get We'wha back to Washington, DC, to speak with the most powerful man on earth.

Ours is a story of identity and belonging. Each learns to rise above the social expectations of their culture and claim their rightful place in the world.

This story, inspired by American history, asks the question, "Who is civilized, and who is savage?"

It's a story about the power of friendship in accomplishing a goal against all odds.

Three misfits.
Two cultures.
One remarkable journey.
